  The RuleML Family of Web Rule Languages   [Slides (pdf)]
  Abstract:
  Since 2000, the RuleML Initiative has developed a family of Web rule languages, which is being consolidated for RuleML 1.0. The family's top-level distinctions are derivation rules, queries, and integrity constraints as well as production and reaction rules. The most developed branch groups derivation (deduction) rule languages, which themselves have a webized Datalog language as their inner core. Datalog RuleML is defined over both Data constants and Individual constants with an optional attribute for IRI webizing. Atomic formulas have n arguments, which can be positional terms or slots (F-logic-like key->term pairs). Object-Oriented Datalog adds optional types and RDF-like oids/anchors, via IRIs. Inheriting all of these Datalog features, Hornlog RuleML adds positional or slotted Functional Expressions as terms. In Hornlog with Equality, such uninterpreted (constructor- like) Functions are complemented by interpreted (equation-defined) Functions. (In modal logics, interpreted Relations are complemented by uninterpreted ones.) This derivation rule branch is extended upward towards First Order Logic, has subbranches for Negation-As-Failure, strong-Negation, or combined languages, and languages with 'pluggable' built-ins. Combinations with Description Logic (OWL) have been explored in a homogeneous manner (SWRL) and using hybrid approaches including Datalog^DL.

  Structure of the session: At the beginning there will be short plenum presentations. The presentation is up to 5 minutes per system - say what you are demonstrating and why it is interesting to give an overview. This presentation will be given from a single computer, to save the time of changing from one presentation to the other. So make sure that you prepare it in PDF, PS or PowerPoint and send it to the organizers before June 6th and/or have it on a USB stick.
  The rest of the session, approximately one hour, the systems are demonstrated live in parallel, in your computer. It is recommended to have a poster that illustrates and supports the demo. Poster walls are available. Internet access is planned to be available.
